While there isn’t widespread sponsorship of general cryptocurrencies by all U.S. Tribes, some Native American tribes and individuals have actively engaged with the cryptocurrency space in various ways:
    1. Development of Tribal Cryptocurrencies:
    * MazaCoin: Launched in 2014 by Payu Harris of the Oglala Lakota Nation, MazaCoin aimed to be a sovereign digital currency for the Lakota Nation. The goal was to empower Native Americans economically and assert sovereignty. While it gained initial traction, its widespread adoption and current status are unclear.
    * NativeCoin (N8V): This cryptocurrency emerged in 2019 with the broader goal of providing Native American Tribes with an all-in-one digital currency for use across Indian Country, aiming to attract business and commerce to tribal lands through online gaming, sports betting, and point-of-sale transactions.
    * One Nation Coin: This is another emerging cryptocurrency with long-term goals to bring a new economic foundation of blockchain technology to Native American people and governments.
    2. Tribal Engagement with Existing Cryptocurrencies:
    * Choctaw Nation: In April 2025, the Choctaw Nation’s gaming operation announced a partnership to integrate cryptocurrency payments directly into their casino in Durant, Oklahoma. This allows patrons to convert Bitcoin, Ethereum, and stablecoins into casino chips without leaving the gaming floor, making them the first U.S. brick-and-mortar casino to do so.
    * Investment in Cryptocurrencies: Some tribes are reportedly considering adding cryptocurrencies to their investment portfolios to participate in the digital asset market.
    3. Tribal Digital Economic Zones:
    * Catawba Indian Nation: The Catawba Nation in South Carolina has established the first Digital Special Economic Zone in the United States, named the Green Earth Zone (GEZ). This zone has its own regulatory framework and commercial codes designed to attract digital asset management, fintech, and cryptocurrency companies to domicile within the Tribe’s lands. The aim is to create economic opportunities and jobs for tribal members.
    Motivations behind Tribal Cryptocurrency Ventures:
    * Economic Empowerment: Cryptocurrencies are seen as a way to boost economic activity within tribal lands and potentially retain wealth within the community, reducing reliance on external financial systems.
    * Sovereignty: For some, creating their own cryptocurrency is viewed as a modern declaration of sovereignty and independence.
    * Financial Inclusion: These initiatives can potentially provide financial services to tribal members who may be underserved by traditional banking systems.
    * Technological Advancement: Engaging with cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology positions tribes at the forefront of innovation.
It’s important to note that while these initiatives exist, cryptocurrency adoption and sponsorship by U.S. Tribes are not yet widespread or uniform. The landscape is still evolving, with some tribes actively exploring and implementing cryptocurrency solutions while others may be taking a more cautious approach.
