While individual farmers across Alberta primarily harvest the grain they grow on their own farms, there are also custom harvesting companies that provide these services to farmers who may not have their own equipment or who need additional harvesting capacity. These companies move throughout Alberta and sometimes even across provinces and into the United States, following the harvest seasons.
Here are some examples of companies involved in grain harvesting in Alberta:
* Walter Harvesting: Based in Lethbridge, Alberta, they offer custom wheat and grain harvesting services across Western Canada and parts of the Midwestern United States.
* Thacker Harvesting Ltd.: Located in Burdett, Alberta, they provide professional custom harvesting services in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and several US states.
* Sunset Custom Harvesters: Operating in northern Alberta, they offer custom harvesting for various crops, including canola, wheat, oats, and peas.
* Bushel Plus Ltd.: While not a harvesting company itself, they provide harvest optimization tools and technologies to help farmers and custom harvesters improve efficiency and reduce grain loss.
* U.S. Custom Harvesters, Inc. (USCHI): This is an association with members that include custom harvesting businesses, some of which operate in Alberta. Their online directory can help locate custom harvesters.
It’s important to understand that the agriculture sector is dynamic, and the specific companies involved in harvesting in a particular region can change over time. Farmers may also hire local individuals or smaller operations for harvesting.
For more specific information and a broader list, you can also consult resources like the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry’s custom rates surveys, which list various custom operators and their services, including grain harvesting. Additionally, the Grain Canada website provides a list of licensed grain companies in Canada, some of which may have harvesting operations or connections to harvesting services.
