The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has recently issued a strong warning to the public against investing in unlicensed online trading platforms, websites, and mobile applications. These platforms are luring investors with promises of unrealistic and high returns on investments in stocks and other financial products, both local and international.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the SECP’s warning:
* Deceptive Practices: These fraudulent platforms are heavily promoted through social media, using deceptive claims of high returns with minimal risk. They solicit investments through unverified mobile or web-based applications that often mimic legitimate trading platforms. To appear credible, they frequently misuse the names, logos, and images of reputable companies, professionals, and even regulatory authorities.
* Fake Dashboards and Initial Lures: The platforms display fake dashboards showing false account balances and profit figures, even though no actual trading or investment is taking place. Initially, some investors might even be allowed to withdraw small profits to build trust. However, this is typically followed by pressure to invest larger amounts.
* Blocked Access and Fund Loss: Once additional funds are deposited, or if an investor refuses to invest further or attempts to withdraw remaining funds, access to their account is suddenly blocked, leading to a complete loss of their investment.
* Specific Platforms Mentioned: The SECP has received complaints against several platforms, including:
* Interactive Brokers Group (IBKR)
* IGIL Securities Country
* BMA Capital No. 108/BMAC Global Pro (which has no affiliation with the legitimate BMA Capital Management Limited)
* WTIC World Top Investor Competition
* Aviva Securities
* Qxbroker (Quotex) – explicitly stated as not authorized to operate in Pakistan and flagged by multiple international regulators.
* Legal Trading Channels in Pakistan: The SECP emphasizes that trading in securities of listed companies and commodities in Pakistan can only be carried out through SECP-licensed securities and futures market brokers. Lists of authorized brokers are available on the official websites of the Pakistan Stock Exchange and Pakistan Mercantile Exchange Limited.
* Inter-Agency Collaboration: The SECP is actively identifying fraudulent platforms and reporting associated bank accounts to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) for appropriate legal action, including blocking access to these platforms within Pakistan. They have also brought the matter to the attention of social media platforms like Meta.
* Public Advisory: The public is strongly urged to:
* Refrain from depositing or investing funds with any unlicensed entities or individuals offering unauthorized trading or investment services.
* Verify the legitimacy of any platform or person involved before committing to any financial arrangement.
* Exercise extreme caution when encountering unsolicited investment offers, especially those promoted through social media, WhatsApp groups, or influencer endorsements.
* Avoid sharing any personal or financial information with unverified sources on social media or messaging apps to prevent financial loss and identity theft.
This warning highlights the growing threat of online investment scams and the importance of due diligence before engaging in any financial activity.Video courtesy of IPO-VID In Patrick’s Opinion
