The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) is working towards establishing a more reliable and regulated stablecoin environment in Hong Kong within the next few years. This initiative follows significant market interest sparked by the upcoming stablecoin law.
Arthur Yuen Kwok-hang, the HKMA’s deputy chief executive, stated at an event that he anticipates tokenization will play a role in economic activities and financial market transactions within five years. He emphasized the importance of developing a complementary platform for the clearing and settlement of tokenized assets, suggesting this infrastructure should be built in advance.
Yuen clarified that stablecoins are considered a unit of tokenized clearing. He also indicated that regulatory work related to tokenization can proceed once the stablecoin ordinance comes into effect on August 1st.
