The Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT), legally known as S.W.I.F.T. SC, is not a private company in the traditional sense. Instead, it is a cooperative society under Belgian law.
Here’s a breakdown of its ownership and structure:
* **Owned by its members: SWIFT is owned and controlled by its shareholders, which are the financial institutions (banks and other member firms) that use its services. These members are from across the globe, numbering over 11,000 in more than 200 countries.
* Cooperative structure: As a cooperative, SWIFT is set up and operated for the collective benefit of its members. Its mission is to act in the interest of its entire member community.
* Governance: SWIFT’s shareholders elect a Board of Directors, currently composed of 25 members, who govern the company and oversee its management. The allocation of shares and the number of board directors each nation is entitled to are determined by the usage of SWIFT’s messaging services from that nation. This ensures that the most active members have the most say and that there is geographical diversity on the board.
* Oversight: SWIFT is overseen by the central banks of the G10 countries, the European Central Bank, and the National Bank of Belgium. This oversight reinforces the neutral and global character of the cooperative.
Therefore, while it’s not a publicly traded company, SWIFT is also not a private company owned by a small group of individuals or private investors. Its unique cooperative structure means it’s owned and governed by its user base – the global financial community.
It’s worth noting that there are other companies with “Swift” in their name, such as “Swift Group” or “SWIFT PRIVATE SECTOR LTD,” which are indeed private companies. However, the SWIFT that operates the international financial messaging network is the member-owned cooperative.
