JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has announced that the bank will allow its clients to buy Bitcoin. This significant shift was revealed at the bank’s annual investor day on Monday, May 19, 2025.
Despite his long-standing skepticism and public criticism of Bitcoin, Dimon stated that while he personally is “not a fan” of the cryptocurrency, he defends his clients’ right to purchase it, drawing a comparison to defending one’s right to smoke.
It’s important to note that while JPMorgan will facilitate client purchases and reflect them on statements, the bank will not provide custody services for the Bitcoin. This means clients will need to rely on a trusted third party for the safekeeping of their digital assets.
This decision by JPMorgan, the largest U.S. bank, marks a notable evolution in the institutional acceptance of Bitcoin and follows similar moves by other financial institutions like Morgan Stanley. The increasing client demand for cryptocurrency exposure is a key factor behind this change.Video courtesy of CSOB
