CME Group’s new FX Spot+ platform recently achieved a significant milestone, trading over $1.4 billion in a single day on May 12, 2025. This impressive volume comes within its first month of operation, attracting over 40 active clients, including 20 banks that had not previously traded FX futures.
FX Spot+ is designed as an all-to-all spot FX marketplace. Its key innovation lies in using implied matching technology to connect cash market participants with the deep liquidity of CME Group’s FX futures market. This allows OTC (over-the-counter) spot traders to seamlessly interact with the futures market through an anonymous, transparent, central limit order book, but in spot format.
This initiative by CME Group aims to address the fragmentation often seen in the FX market, providing a more centralized and efficient way to access liquidity. By translating futures liquidity into spot terms, FX Spot+ expands access for OTC traders without requiring them to establish futures market relationships or manage the inherent forward risk of futures contracts.
The strong start for FX Spot+ indicates a positive reception from a diverse set of global clients, suggesting its potential to reshape the FX trading ecosystem by bridging listed and OTC FX markets.
