The European Stability Mechanism (ESM) has chosen Eurex Clearing to voluntarily clear its over-the-counter (OTC) interest rate swaps (IRS). This decision, announced on May 15, 2025, is a significant step towards strengthening the EU financial ecosystem and promoting financial stability.
By voluntarily committing to central counterparty (CCP) clearing, the ESM aims to mitigate counterparty risk, reduce risk management costs, and streamline its operational processes. This move also aligns with the objectives of EMIR 3.0 (the third edition of the European Market Infrastructure Regulation) and supports Eurex Clearing’s efforts to build a robust alternative liquidity pool within the EU, fostering Europe’s strategic autonomy in clearing.
The ESM, which provides financial assistance to euro area member states, uses interest rate swaps as essential instruments to manage its financial obligations and ensure cost-effective lending programs. Becoming a clearing member at Eurex Clearing underscores the ESM’s commitment to innovation and progress within the European financial system, contributing to deeper and more integrated European capital markets.Video courtesy of ABN-AMRO
