Canada’s post-trade modernization initiative is being hailed as a “game changer” for the country’s capital markets. The Canadian Depository for Securities (CDS), a subsidiary of TMX Group and Canada’s equities and fixed income clearinghouse, has implemented significant upgrades to its foundational clearing technology.
Key aspects and benefits of this modernization include:
* Enhanced Efficiency and Resilience: The new infrastructure, powered by TCS BaNCS for Market Infrastructure, aims to provide best-of-breed, efficient, and resilient post-trade services. This upgrade is crucial for managing market volatility and adapting to increasing demands.
* Strengthened Global Competitiveness: By modernizing its core technology, Canada is better positioned to compete for global investment flows. This makes the Canadian market more attractive to international participants.
* Faster Settlement (T+1 readiness): The modernization was implemented in anticipation of and to support the move to a T+1 settlement cycle (trade date plus one business day), which came into effect in late May 2024, aligning with the US. This shorter settlement cycle significantly reduces credit, counterparty, and settlement risk by minimizing the time that trades remain unsettled. It also increases market efficiency and can lead to lower collateral requirements.
* Improved Collateral Management: The upgrade includes the introduction of domestic tri-party repo capabilities for the first time in Canada, aimed at increasing repo market liquidity. It also streamlines and simplifies end-to-end domestic collateral management activities, which can decrease capital requirements.
* Modernized User Experience: A new front-end system allows participants to access information more efficiently, replacing outdated interfaces.
* Greater Flexibility and Adaptability: The new platform enables faster and more cost-effective updates to adapt to evolving market needs and provides new opportunities and capabilities in TMX’s post-trade businesses. This includes support for cloud, data analytics, and machine learning.
* Enhanced Security: The modernization incorporates robust security technology integrations and advanced resiliency management features to protect sensitive information.
* Standardization: The adoption of ISO standardized SWIFT messages and reporting tools supports greater efficiency.
Overall, the post-trade modernization is seen as a crucial step in advancing Canada’s capital markets infrastructure, ensuring it remains secure, reliable, and efficient for years to come.Video courtesy of First Bank of Nigeria
