Jenny Johnson, the CEO of Franklin Templeton, a major investment management firm, is a strong proponent of blockchain technology as the future of finance. She believes that newer, more efficient blockchain networks will revolutionize the industry, leading to significant changes in how financial transactions are processed and recorded.
Johnson has publicly stated that the financial industry is poised to “evolve more in the next five years than in the last 50” due to this shift towards digital assets and distributed ledger technology. She emphasizes that the advantages of blockchain are so compelling that the transition will not be slow or incremental.
She has specifically highlighted the potential of “hyper-efficient coordination machines” like Solana and Sui blockchains to replace large parts of the existing financial infrastructure, potentially rivaling the transaction throughput of traditional networks like Visa. This shift, according to Johnson, could enable 24/7 trading, faster transaction finalization, and more frequent dividend and interest payments.
Johnson has also issued a stark warning to established players in traditional finance who may be resistant to this change. She draws a parallel to the demise of Blockbuster, suggesting that firms unwilling to embrace blockchain technology risk obsolescence and could be “wiped out” within the next five years.
Franklin Templeton has been actively involved in the digital asset space, launching a blockchain venture fund and offering various cryptocurrency ETFs, including a combined Bitcoin and Ether ETF. This proactive approach underscores Johnson’s conviction in the transformative power of blockchain for the financial sector.
