Recent reports indicate that Rob Whitfield and Christine Holman are on a shortlist to be appointed to an expert panel that will conduct an inquiry into the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) group. This inquiry, launched by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), will focus on the ASX’s governance, capability, and risk management frameworks and practices.
Rob Whitfield is a highly experienced figure in the Australian financial sector. He is currently a Non-Executive Director at Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), Transurban Group, and GPT Group. His extensive career includes serving as the former CEO of Westpac Institutional Bank and former Secretary of NSW Treasury. He brings over 35 years of leadership experience in both private and public sectors, with a strong focus on financial services, risk management, and organizational transformation.
Christine Holman is a professional non-executive director with over 30 years of experience across various sectors, including media, property, industrial, infrastructure, and technology. She has held senior executive roles, notably as Chief Financial Officer and Commercial Director at Telstra Broadcast Services. Ms. Holman currently serves on the boards of ASX-listed companies AGL Ltd, Metcash Limited, and Collins Foods Limited, among others. Her expertise spans financial management, commercial negotiations, and the implementation of digital transformations.
The inquiry into ASX follows repeated and serious failures in its critical market infrastructure, which have raised concerns with both ASIC and the Reserve Bank of Australia. The expert panel will be tasked with identifying organizational and cultural factors contributing to these incidents, assessing the effectiveness of rectification measures, and recommending necessary changes to bolster market trust. The full composition of the panel is expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
