The Depository Trust Company (DTC), a subsidiary of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC), has achieved a significant milestone by surpassing $100 trillion in assets under custody. This record-setting figure, reaching $100.3 trillion in 2025, represents a 37% increase from its 2020 total of $73.5 trillion. The growth is attributed to a general rise in U.S. market capitalization and strong performance across various asset classes.
Key growth figures from 2020 to 2025 include:
* Equities: Increased by 49% to $74.1 trillion from $49.6 trillion.
* Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs): Doubled in value, growing by 100% to $11 trillion from $5.5 trillion.
* Money Market Instruments: Saw a 28% increase, reaching $4.1 trillion from $3.2 trillion.
As the central securities depository for equities, corporate bonds, and municipal bonds in the U.S. capital markets, DTC plays a crucial role in the post-trade lifecycle. Its services include safekeeping and asset servicing, underwriting, corporate actions processing, securities processing, global tax services, and issuer services. By holding securities on behalf of financial institutions, custodian banks, and brokers, DTC helps to reduce market risk and ensure timely and accurate settlement.
